| Tenth Bi-annual Meet of the Alumni Association of PESIT - A Report

The meet was scheduled on August 15, 2006 at PESIT Campus. It began at 8.30 am with the college staff and alumni members participating in the flag hoisting at the Open Air Theatre. Prof Abdul Aziz, Former Head, Department of Economics, Institute of Social and Economic Change, Bangalore, unfurled the national flag.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Aziz urged the teachers and students alike to shun general human opportunistic behaviour like cheating, lying and stealing and to perform their duties without compromising on virtues.
This was followed by registration and alumni members assembled at the Auditorium for the rest of the programme.
Principal, Dr K N B Murthy summarized the events that have taken place at PESIT since the last alumni meet of 26 January, 2006, as follows:
1. The honourable Chief Minister of Karnataka, Mr H D Kumaraswamy laid the foundation stone for 'PES Centre of Advanced Studies' on May 12, 2006. The new building will have ground + eight floors, apart from a basement and will house the CS, IS, EC and TE departments.
2. Intake for the first year BE programme has been increased from the existing 630 to 780, along with the addition of the new branch of Electrical and Electronics Engineering.
3. Two projects from the AICTE - Establishment of Entrepreneurial Development Cell for ME and Advanced Communication Lab for EC departments have received sanction, along with one project from the Naval Research Board in the area of Welding for the ME department.
4. Research Proposals have been sent to ISRO under the Respond Scheme, Naval Research Board and DST.
5. The following M Tech programmes will commence from August 21:
- VLSI and Embedded Systems - Department of Electronics
- Computer Science Engineering - Department of Computer Science
- Manufacturing Engineering - Department of Mechanical Engg
6. With the recent addition of 13 faculty members with doctorates, the total number of Ph D holders on campus now stands at 35. The faculty strength of the institution is presently 216.
7. A survey conducted by IDC - Data Quest during June 2006 revealed that PESIT is the No. 1 technical institution in the State and No. 23 on the all India level.
8. Two national seminars were conducted by the Department of Compute Science, one on Graph Theory and the other on Unstructured Data Management, both of which were highly acclaimed.
9. The department of Information Science Engineering conducted the International Conference on Embedded Systems, Mobile Communication and Computing (ICEMC²) which was well received.
10. The institution has signed an MoU with IBM to upgrade the existing employees from Bachelors to Masters, which will be conducted by the Department of Computer Science.
11. The institution recorded 511 placements for the graduating class of 2006, the highest-ever so far. In addition to this, 492 students of the 530 eligible from the graduating class of 2007 have been placed in the campus recruitment held recently. Infosys made 211 offers to students on Day 1 of the placement process - another highest for PESIT.
12. Setting up Research Centres in all departments, going in for a five-year NBA accreditation, establishing Centres of Excellence in all departments and becoming a Deemed University by 2010 are among the institutes future plans.
13. It is proposed to set up a Student Benevolent Fund called "Shiksha Kalpa" from voluntary contributions from individuals and organizations, in order to fund poor meritorious students in pursuit of higher education. Many faculty members have already come forward to donate for the cause. Alumni members also have the option to contribute.
14. Three national conferences will take place this semester. They will be organized by the departments of Bio Technology, Mechanical Engineering and Science & Humanities during the months of September, November and January '07, respectively.
15. Two software teams from the CS dept were selected for the National Finals of the Microsoft Academic Challenge Competition. PESIT was the only college with two teams in the finals.
16.The Department of Computer Science has signed MoUs with IBM, HP and Core Objects and MoUs with Sun Technologies, Yahoo and Ritzen are in the pipeline.
Ex-students such as Mr Amit Jain (2006, MCA), Mr Nikhil (2006, BT), Mr Pranesh, Mr Krishna Murthy and many others took active part in the event. They appreciated the achievements of PESIT over the past 6 months. The following suggestions were made by the Alumni members:
- Arrange a photo session during every alumni meet - this suggestion was immediately implemented.
- Information of alumni to be updated on the college website at regular intervals - to this, the Principal stated that as and when information about alumni is provided to the college, it will be updated.
- It was unanimously decided to have an exclusive Alumni get-together, apart from the regular August 15 and January 26 meets. Mr Subash K Yadav, Assistant Professor, Dept of MCA, PESIT will finalise the date for this year's get-together and inform the alumni of the same. The college will make all the arrangements for this get-together.
- A PowerPoint presentation of the events in the college, rather than merely reading the same out was suggested.
- Present students must be more involved in all alumni activities.
- By-laws for the Alumni Association must be framed and implemented.
- Lectures by Alumni have to be arranged - the Principal stated that this would be conducted under the title "Alumnus Speaks".
The following benefits were announced by the college for alumni:
- Conference/ Workshop fees will be waived off for alumni
- Members will get three library cards for borrowing books by depositing a prescribed amount in the library.
- Playground will be available free of cost for alumni. A minimum amount will be charged for corporate use.
- Alumni members can avail of the gymnasium facilities.
