BOOTSTRAP 2019

At PES University, we do our best to nurture skills and values that will stand you in good stead no matter which career you choose. Our unique educational methods will ensure that you gain not just depth and breadth in your chosen area of specialization, but a holistic set of skills that will equip you to face the real world.

WHAT IS BOOTSTRAP

Bootstrap brings together groups of students to accomplish practical tasks. The exercise shapes a realistic approach to problem solving and helps know the skills to be acquired as an engineer. Bootstrap exposes participants to situations where they can assess how skilful they are and know what they lack.

WHY BOOTSTRAP

Skills inspire us to take the steps towards the goals, be they academic, professional or personal. Improving practical skills can help make the most of an active academic environment on campus and all that is gained by attending classes.

HOW BOOTSTRAP HELPS

Bootstrap offers opportunities to build the basic skills which you apply right then and watch your capabilities make a difference.

  • Engineering can be lot more interesting if you see it working in day to day activities.
  • You can realize how studying with passion can help you solve real world problems and not just theoretical problems
  • Engineering studies make you curious about machines and everyday appliances and inspire you think differently and come up with solutions
Building upon what you learn at Bootstrap.
  • Ability to solve practical problems gives the confidence in meeting the expectations of all Stakeholders who count on you
  • The importance of Process in improving your capabilities and aiming higher
  • Applying mind to challenges we encounter so often and overcoming them helps build an Identity one can be happy about
  • The importance of Research and how researchers have worked hard to come up with solutions
  • Initiatives on your own show how resourceful we all are and we can surely achieve what we never thought possible
  • A lot more difficult tasks can be completed as a Team member
1. ELECTRICAL

One takes the switches, plugs and appliances for granted and never attempts to rectify them when they stop working. Understanding how it all works and handling it can make repair and maintenance an easy task.

House Wiring Practice

  • Two-way control of lamps
  • Three-way control of lamps
  • MCB operation with load
  • Demonstration of contactor used in motors in pumps and flour mills
  • Types of wiring

Troubleshooting home appliances

  • Practical connection of tube light
  • Troubleshooting a ceiling Fan
  • Troubleshooting a mixer-grinder
  • Troubleshooting an iron box
  • Tesla Coil
2. MECHANICAL

The two-wheeler and four-wheeler are complex machines but we can make a beginning in understanding it by handling the minor tasks which are essential to their smooth working.

Basic Automobile Servicing of 2-Wheeler

  • Engine oil change: Inspection of used and unused engine oil
  • Carburetor cleaning: Dismantling and assembling of carburetor
  • Spark plug cleaning
  • Chain sprocket: Tightening and lubrication of chain sprocket

In a four-wheeler learn to handle:

  • Disc brake: Servicing, assembling of brake pads
  • Air filter, Engine timer belt and wind shield cleanser: Positioning, inspection, cleaning, water filling
  • Cross Joint & propeller shaft: Checking bolts
  • Wheel changing: Use of jacks and high torque box spanners
  • Fuse box: Location, checking for faulty sensors or electrical circuits
  • Drum brake: Assembling and dismantling, inspection for wear and tear
3. ELECTRONICS

Time you see, check and fiddle with all the physical and wireless connections which makes gadgets work.

Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing – OFDM

  • Implement OFDM modulation- demodulation in GRC software
  • Implementing OFDM techniques
  • QPSK, QAM

Image Processing in Day to Day Life

  • Applications of image processing
  • Face recognition; eye, ear, smile, expression detection; object tracking
  • Using Anaconda Python, Open CV and Tensor Flow softwares; web cameras and microphones

TV trainer module demonstration

  • Implement basic operations
  • Simulate faults at various stages
  • Hands on fault creation, detection

Traffic light interface Microcontroller

  • Simulation of the control and operation

AM, FM and Music LED

  • Generating AM signal and observing in CRO
  • Generating FM signal and observing in CRO
  • Assemble music synced LED circuit

Automatic Dependent Surveillance Broadcast

  • Detect signals from Aircraft and determine its position using SDR.
  • GNU Radio
  • Practical Implementation of flow graphs using RTL Sdr (R820T)

FM Reception

  • Using RTL SDR

Music tone generator Microcontroller

  • Using 8051 micro-controller
  • Generating sound in seven tones
4. DESIGN THINKING SKILLS

Design thinking is a systematic approach to problem solving which helps you develop practical innovative solutions for difficult and ambiguous real world problems. This process focuses on need finding, understanding, creating, thinking, and doing.
At the core of this process is a bias towards action and creation. With a special focus on Computer Science, this hands on workshop delivered in Hackathon style, promises to change the way you think forever! And for all you know you might end up with an exciting start-up idea during the workshop.
Design Thinking skills is not about a new way of learning and studying. It is about exploring your field of study and be prepared for a field that’s changing all the time.
Got some amazing Ideas? Want to translate them to reality? Design Thinking is here to help.

5. SOCIAL AWARENESS SKILLS

The focus on academic interests makes the need to volunteer for social activities equally important.
Your learnings:

  • Empathy
  • Helping the under privileged
  • Sense of gratitude

Activities:
Volunteering for charity organizations.
Students learn how to systematically manage and provide services to the needy in the best possible way. For instance, students assist Akshaya Patra foundation in their efforts in reaching out to every child through mid-day meal program.

Visiting schools in villages and those adopted by PES.

Teams of students take up and complete work related to:

  • Painting of walls and blackboard
  • Cleaning up and preparing the play area, installing sports equipment
  • Planting saplings
  • Creating awareness about health and hygiene through interactions, songs and cultural activities
  • Repairs and civil works
